History

Corel was founded in June of 1985 by Dr. Michael Cowpland. From its inception until 1988, the Company was engaged primarily in the systems integration business and provided customers with turnkey PC-based desktop publishing systems and local area networks by combining hardware and software products from various manufacturers with the Company's proprietary software enhancements. As a result of its experience in developing proprietary enhancements, Corel began, in 1987, to devote additional resources to developing a separately packaged illustration software program. In January 1989, the Company introduced its first version of CorelDRAW. Corel's most recent release, CorelDRAW 4, was introduced in May of 1993.

In 1987, also in connection with its systems integration division, the Company developed SCSI interface software for connecting PCs to optical peripherals. In May 1992, Corel introduced CorelSCSI, an interface software package that permits up to seven different peripherals to be connected to a PC with a single interface board.

In April of 1993, Corel introduced two new producs: CorelSCSI PRO, positioned as an advanced SCSI software solution allowing users to maximize the performance of their SCSI peripherals, and CorelRAID, the Company's software-based solution for data security.
