Here we are in the old city of Jerusalem, not far from the Jaffa Gate. The wall behind us is from
the early Ottoman period, I believe: the walls of Jerusalem were destroyed by the Arab leaders at
the time of the crusades in order to prevent the crusaders from taking a walled city.
The old city is an interesting and complicated mixture of construction from periods dating back to
Roman occupation around the beginning of the millenium. Jerusalem has seen many conquerors, and
each conquering group built their own additions to the city, sometimes tearing down the work of the
previous inhabitants and re-using the stone.
