And this is Dent de Crolles (Tooth of Crolles). Its
peak is about 2000m, the chalet and St. Hilaire are at about 1000m, and
the town of Crolles is in the Isere valley at about 200m. Although
there are a couple of mountain passes that lead to the top of Dent de Crolles,
we didn't manage to hike them as they are impassable in winter, and it
snowed in mid-November before we had a chance to make our assault on the
tooth. However, on the first day that we were there, we hiked up
to the bottom of the sheer cliff at the left of the photo. It was
almost summer at that time, and we hiked in T-shirts. This was about
600 or so metres of elevation that we hiked, and we were tired for quite
a while after that. We also made a hike to the Source des Sangliers
(spring of the wild boars) which is on the right of the photo, although
we didn't actually see any real sangliers (malheureusement!).
There were many trails in the area, and we managed to hike most of them.
In addition, Diana rented cross country skis for a week and explored some
of the area. She took most of these photos while skiing.
